  • Boiled Egg Step by Step
The original inspiration!
Chocolate madeira cakes
Top cut off "bowl" no.1
Top piece cut into a round, flat "disc"
Circle of marzipan on top of "flat disc"
Bottom of bowl 1 added
Natural coloured marzipan rolled out using plastic spacers
Marzipan draped over cake
Gently eased with fingers into sides of cake
"Bowl" cake no.2
Top flattened
Inverted
Checking for size on the "eggcup"
The third cake on top - this was mistake no. 1 - the small round cake should have been wider!
Sides built up into egg shape with marzipan
sides covered in white fondant icing
and the top
coloured marzipan round sides
top edges of "shell" thinned and "cracked" pieces added round back
more "cracks" in shell added
big mistake no.2 - "eggcup" started to collapse under the weight!
so I added 3 dowels
and three more!

The Cakes . . .

were either rich fruit, or chocolate, and were baked by my wife. I hand-carved them, and covered them with coloured marzipan (the family’s favourite!). I used sugarpaste only when necessary (not such a favourite with the family!) – eg. when I needed something white. Tylo powder was added when decorations needed to be self-supporting. All the cakes were 100% edible, nothing inedible was ever used.

Unfortunately, the early photographs are poor quality, but the quality of both the pictures and the cakes improved over the years!
